SkySaber

RC Circuit Breadboard

Winner of Most Innovative Hack, Second Place, at MakeMIT 2020

We created an IOT fencing saber by turning the saber into a capacitance sensor to detect when it hits a player. As opposed to a >$500 conventional fencing system which requires the fencers to wear wires, our sub-$20 IOT saber transmits hits data through wi-fi to a server, cutting cost and inconvenience. In addition to improving current fencing hit detection, the platform provides ample opportunities for analysis and data collection.

The saber detects hits by setting up an RC circuit and measuring the time it takes for a voltage to propagate across the circuit. This allows us to infer the time constant of the system, and also its capacitance, which changes when the saber comes into contact with a person or another saber.

This project won the Most Innovative Hack sponsor award from InfoSys at MakeMIT 2020.
